Coaching Podcast: How to Cope with Feelings as A Life Coach

Unsure of how to cope with feelings as a life coach? Understanding the foundations of your emotions is the first step towards handling them better.

The Catalyst Life Coaching Podcast, featuring JRNI Coaching founders John Kim and Noelle Cordeaux is a deep dive into the experience and business of being a life coach. In this episode of the Catalyst Life Coaching Podcast, we discuss some tips on how to come with feelings as a life coach. Subscribe to get all our episodes!

Getting intertwined with feelings is perhaps one of the most common experiences of a life coach. Because we invest so much in helping our clients advance and push through with their lives, it’s not rare for it to take a toll on our own emotional health. Which is why it’s fairly important for life coaches like you to know how to keep your emotions in check. Understand that feeling bad or down or confused is all normal. Knowing how to cope with feelings takes time and practice, and we have some tips for you to start with.

Name your emotions and allow them to exist

Believe it or not, naming your emotions can have a great impact on understanding better how to keep your emotions in check. And generally, how to cope with them. Instead of simply saying you’re feeling down or focused, get to the bottom of it. Because most likely, the core is clearer than this. It is not just “feeling bad” period. Oftentimes, there’s a deeper reason to it and by naming your emotion, you’re getting a clearer view on why you are feeling bad. And know that this is totally okay. All life coaches deal with it.

By practicing to name your emotions, you’re allowing them to exist. Through this, you’re allowing yourself to accept the fact that you are feeling said emotions. Rather than the usual human response of fighting it, allowing them to exist makes it easier to cope.

This is a feeling, not a fact

One thing we often mention in The Catalyst Coaching Intensive is this: “this is a feeling, not a fact.” Because that’s exactly what it is. If you feel terrible about being late to a meeting or the person who cut you off in traffic or anything else of that sort, that is merely a feeling. It will pass. You will learn how to deal with it. It’s not a fact that will stay forever or will heavily affect your life coaching business.

Instead of dwelling in our feelings, which often result in us judging ourselves, it’s healthier to practice positive psychology. And remind ourselves that our feelings are simply feelings, and they will pass.

Give meditation a shot

Not everybody is a fan of meditation, but if you want to know how to keep your emotions in check, and learn better how to cope with feelings, considering meditation might work. The thing about meditation is that it forces you to focus on what is happening now and understand everything about it. Rather than simply settling on “I feel really sad right now,” meditation teaches you to understand that feeling, and find its root and explore the sensation a bit deeper.

Don’t let your emotions take you hostage

This is yet another one of the pillars of positive psychology and we want to highlight this. Do not let your emotions take you hostage. It is one thing to name your emotions and allow them to exist, it’s another to let them take control of your life, your business, your coaching practice. Keep in mind that while you can allow your emotions to exist by acknowledging them, it’s vital to know that you are in control. You are in control of how these emotions affect you and how you react to them. The thing is, many life coaches often get so drowned in their emotions that they forget this. Thus, here’s a friendly reminder...

Understand that you’re not alone

It’s a common myth in the life coaching business that coaches are always positive. That they have it all figured out or have all their shit together. Because of this, many new coaches feel alone when their emotions circle in their brain and starts affecting them and their business. Keep in mind that you are not alone. All coaches, somewhere along the line, have experienced exactly what you’re experiencing with your emotions. All coaches have forgotten the pillars of positive psychology and have to relearn them time and again.

Knowing that you're not alone can greatly impact how you cope with your emotions. It’s also helpful to have someone you trust, a friend or perhaps your own personal coach, to help you navigate through your feelings especially when they are heavy.

Life isn’t something to be solved over the weekend

The same thing goes for your business. If you’re still in the process of building your coaching business and you’re overwhelmed with emotions, keep in mind that it’s not something you should figure out and perfect over the weekend. It takes time and perseverance. It takes vulnerability and authenticity. If you want to know how to keep your emotions in check, you must also understand that the process of learning is not as fast as you may think. That said, be patient with yourself.
