Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lumia accredited by the International Coaching Federation?
+

Yes! Our program is accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF) as a Level 2 Program. The ICF is the only globally recognized, independent credentialing program for coach practitioners and training programs. The ICF is a non-profit, professional organization and its mission is to build, support and preserve the integrity of the coaching profession.

When you graduate from our Signature program, you will be awarded the full 125 educational hours you need for either your ICF ACC or PCC Credential.

At Lumia we train life coaches to work and build practices in the wellness marketplace. We certify that all of our coaches have been trained in our evidence-based technique and are theoretically, relationally and ethically qualified to work as coaches. Our training is grounded in adaptive therapeutic change technique, goal-setting theory, the science of positive psychology, and much more.

What does it mean that Lumia is a Level 2 Program with the ICF?
+

We offer coach training for both ACC and PCC Credentials under the new Level 2 Program path, what used to be called the ACTP path.

Getting an ICF credential is a way of showing legitimacy and higher education as a professional coach. Corporations that hire full-time coaches typically require an ICF credential for employment.

There are three levels of ICF credentialing, Lumia offers a path for the first two levels:
ACC – Associate Certified Coach
PCC – Professional Certified Coach

MCC – Master Certified Coach

Is Lumia related to JRNI Coaching?
+

Yes! Lumia is the new name and identity of JRNI Coaching. We wanted a bold name that reflected our mission as a community. We found a name that better reflects you and all the people in this community – people who are bright, progressive coaches, driven to make a difference in the world.

We’re still an ICF accredited, evidence based coach training program with 20+ diverse instructors and a community like no other. As Lumia, we’re expanding and offering a bigger variety of improved classes, upgrading the overall student experience and adding more business training and opportunities to grow professionally and personally.

The next chapter is going to be really exciting, and we’re so glad to share it all with you. There’s never been a better time to become a coach, and we can’t wait to see where coaching takes you.

What are the advantages of coach training with Lumia?
+

A lot of talented people dream of having a coaching business, but aren’t quite sure how to get there. We train and certify adventurous coaches, making sure you’ve got all you need to build a business you love and transform lives, on your terms.

Lumia offers science-backed, evidence-based life coach training that is deeply rooted in positive psychology. Our program is entirely online and lasts roughly 6-9 months, depending on which track you select. This includes live weekly coach training, exposure to a wide variety of methods and techniques, business development and so much more. We are not just a training program but a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive community of coaches who are committed to bettering ourselves and the world.

Lumia goes above and beyond, offering lifetime support, live events, real world experience and a solid foundational community to motivate and support you as you work towards your own, unique coaching practice that fulfills you!

Lumia is accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF), the only globally recognized, independent credentialing program for coach practitioners, via their Level 2 Program (for those who want to get an ACC or PCC Credential). This isn’t a life coaching program, it’s a life changing program. We say this because we’ve seen it time and time again and we can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself.

What’s the difference between the Essentials and Signature tracks?
+

Signature is our core coach training program and offers science-backed, evidence-based life coach training that is deeply rooted in positive psychology. The Signature program lasts about 9 months, which includes live weekly coach training, exposure to a wide variety of coaching methods and techniques, as well as business development training.

Signature is for those seeking to get their Associate Certified Coach (ACC) or Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credentialing from the ICF and includes classes in core competencies, test prep, mentor coaching and more.

The Essentials Track is our streamlined 6 month coach training track, for those who want the same great coach training, community and support but who are not interested in gaining their ACC or PCC credential certification via the ICF.

What experience is required to become a coach?
+

A great coach is someone who works in partnership with their clients to set goals, and provides motivation, support and accountability. They're passionate about helping others, future-focused and always learning and growing.

No previous background or academic coursework in psychology or coaching is required. An ICF-accredited coach training program will provide you with the foundation, tools, and techniques needed to get started as a coach.

We encourage our students to bring their whole selves to coaching -- their story, history, experiences and unique skills -- and create a practice that is as unique as you are. A successful coach can come from almost any background.

Our graduates are therapists, executives, managers, HR professionals, fitness experts, influencers, stay-at-home dads, mothers looking to re-enter the workforce, nurses, yoga instructors and many more. For just a few examples, check out our graduate Case Studies!

The people who find us have a strong desire to improve themselves and a calling to do this work. They often tell us that they’ve been coaching informally and having these conversations for years, and now want to take it to the next level with professional training and support.

If you feel the pull to do this, then you are probably in the right place! Let’s schedule a call to talk more about your goals and how Lumia can help you.

How does Lumia define life coaching?
+

Life coaching is a partnership between a coach and a client that moves the client forward to become the best version of themself through the application of motivation, accountability, planning, troubleshooting and support.

What’s the difference between coaching and therapy?
+

As a coach, this is one of the questions that you’ll learn how to comfortably address! Therapy is practiced by a licensed mental health professional, and is focused on bringing people from suffering to baseline. Therapy deals more with behavioral or emotional challenges, and works to bring clients to a state of baseline mental health and wellness.

Coaching supports people in moving from baseline to flourishing. It helps functional people envision their ideal life and strive toward the achievement of  higher goals. The main focus is on flourishing, and building toward a desired future state. Coaching is client-directed, and the topics the client brings to the conversation set the agenda for your work together.

Lumia focuses on coaching. We will teach you how to know the difference between coaching and other modalities, as well as when and how to refer out clients who need therapy instead of coaching.

What does it take to become a successful life coach?
+

Passion, determination, effort, time and desire to help others. It won’t be an overnight success, but if you have the training, put in the time, continue learning and working towards your goals, then it’s more than possible to build a thriving business as a coach.

If you’re looking for coach training that gives you an edge, the Signature program is your pathway to ICF credentialing, which is useful for commanding a higher rate and working with corporations.

Graduates of our program have gone on to work as full time coaches, part time coaches, coaches at corporations and every other version of coaching you can imagine.

Everyone has their own definition of success. For some, it’s a full practice with many one-on-one clients. For others, it’s a side gig with a few clients. For others, it’s a way to add to their skillset in their current job or a way into speaking, book deals, etc.

The Lumia Community, before and after graduation, exists to support and encourage you as you build your unique practice over time!

What if I currently have a full-time job, do I need lots of time for Lumia?
+

Most people who become life coaches have a full-time job. Lumia is designed to be taken while you are continuing your life, which includes a full-time job or family obligations.

We recommend students spend about 4-6 hours on reading and practice outside of the 2-hour weekly live classes. That’s why our classes are scheduled on evenings or Sunday mornings, around typical work hours. All of the homework and materials are available to you online in our Student Portal, so you can work through the materials and homework on your own time.

When is the best time to begin?
+

In coaching, we ask this question of our clients -- where are you now, where do you want to be and what’s standing in the way?

Overthinking and fear will always try to keep you from making a difference in this world, if you let them. The best time to take a step towards the life you want is... now. Really! If you’re reading this, it’s been brewing inside you. There’s no perfect time to begin this incredible journey. If this is something you’ve been thinking about for a while, you just have to let go and start the journey.

So many people wait because they think they have to be at a better place in their life or have “their sh*t together.” That’s not true. Co-founder John Kim helped thousands when he was at the lowest point in his life. If you’re passionate about becoming a life coach, do it now.

How do I enroll?
+

If you are ready to begin your journey, you can click here to enroll.

How long is the program?
+

For Signature, there are 35 weeks of live instruction and mentor sessions. For the Essentials Track, there are 20 weeks of live instruction. For both tracks, there are breaks for major holidays.

What if I want to retake a class or the entire program?
+

We allow you to retake the entire program whenever you’d like for a one time fee of $995.

After graduation, while you still have access to the Student Portal (for Essentials -- up to 12 months after your cohort's graduation, for Signature -- 12 months after your first Signature class) -- if you simply want to sit in on a class for a refresh or just because you loved the instructor, you can do so free of charge for up to 5 live class sessions of your choosing from the Essentials program (not valid on Signature Classes).

Will Lumia help me find clients?
+

Lumia provides an incredible foundational coaching education in how to work with humans. Lumia also prepares you to launch your unique practice by helping you hone in on a coaching niche, as well as classes in business building, social media, branding, entrepreneurship and a roadmap to launch your practice.

Lumia will also provide you with your own Coach Profile Page so you don't have to worry about building out a website to launch your practice. We offer exposure to the world of wellness through live events and real world experiences.

Of course, that's only the beginning. Many of our coaches team up, network and mastermind together to grow their businesses. Your coaching skills also enhance your current skill-set and abilities, and you will find ways to use coaching as a skill at your current job. You will also coach people in your own offline communities. Friends, family, co-workers. As you grow as a coach, you will embark on partnerships and attract people through word of mouth and referrals as you build your practice in other ways.

How do I find my niche?
+

We offer a specialized class to help you uncover your unique niche! As a coach, you will specialize in a certain area, depending on what you’re passionate about. Usually it’s tied to your story and what you’ve overcome and grown through. But you won’t be locked into it as our niches and specialties change as we change and grow.

At the end of the day, you’ll coach people in anything you’re passionate about. That being said, everything overlaps so just because your niche is relationships doesn’t mean you won’t be talking about other things like life transitions, family, etc. Your “type” of coaching is just a way to market and brand yourself. There is no limit when it comes to the content of the session. You’ll coach your clients on what they need coaching on and what you feel confident in coaching.

Can I become a coach if I still have sh*t to deal with in my own life?
+

This is one of the greatest misconceptions about life coaching, that you have to be perfect or have your “sh*t” together to help others. It is also completely false. Yes, you have to be able to get out of bed and hold a conversation, but you don’t have to be a perfect person at the top of your life game with every single thing going well.

Lumia co-founder John Kim was going through a divorce and starting his life all over when he began coaching people. All you need to coach someone is a passion to help others, training, a strong community, and a story. You already have a story that can help others, and Lumia is here to help you with the rest of it!

Do I have to become a professional coach or do coaching skills apply in other fields?
+

Many of our graduates choose to apply what they’ve learned at Lumia to their existing full time positions and found that satisfying on a number of levels. Our training enhances your current skill set and gives you new tools to utilize in your current role. Therapists, HR professionals, techies, nurses, teachers, social workers -- all of these people have found our training useful in elevating their existing skills and for assuming leadership positions within their organizations.

Major companies spend a great deal on life coach training institutes, so your training can benefit the organizations that you are already working alongside. There are countless opportunities for professionals to use coaching techniques and many people who utilize these skills don’t call themselves coaches.

Is the program 100% online?
+

Yes. The training portion of the program is entirely online, which means you have the freedom and flexibility you need to learn how to become a life coach. We use Zoom to host our live, real-time, online classes. They are interactive and you can see and talk to everybody in the class. We offer a variety of class times to cater to different schedules.  We post recordings of all class sessions for you to reference later. Everything is done online from the comfort of your own home or on the go. We also host optional real-world events and gather together at our Lumia Annual Retreat.

What if I miss a class?
+

If you miss a class, you will watch the recording and write up a summary to make it up. You’re welcome to miss and make-up up to 5 live classes. You also have the option of sitting in on a class through another cohort if you’d like to have the live experience.

What can I expect to accomplish by the end of this course?
+

You will graduate Lumia as a certified life coach -- with so many new tools in your coaching toolbox, confidence, business development, new self awareness, personal growth, a road map to build your unique practice as well as strong personal friendships and connections to others who are on the same path as you.

You will join our incredible network and community of alumni and have the opportunity to write for our blog and coach at our live events, gain access to our job board and ongoing partnerships.

You'll also be forever changed as a person, in the best ways possible, but that's harder to quantify!
