Do Life Coaches Need To Be Certified?
If you’re thinking of becoming a life coach, chances are you may be wondering whether or not to get certified. And... where to get your certification in case you decide to go that route. So let's talk about it!
Do you really need it?
Do people build successful life coaching businesses without getting certified? Yes. It's absolutely possible.
The life coaching industry is unregulated, which means you do not need any special license, training, or certification to coach other people. You can just do it.
However, we believe certification is useful for a few different reasons. Not only that, the type of training and credentialing you may want or need will also depend on your unique goals. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to coaching. It’s all about finding the right path for you.
What is the purpose of a coaching certification?
When your audience and potential clients know that you are a certified life coach, they know you have dedicated time, money and effort into developing your coaching skills. It signals that you are a professional, and take the work you're embarking upon with them seriously.
What will you learn?
Life coach training and certification programs will teach you coaching theory, intervention, technique, frameworks and ethics to help you facilitate effective client sessions. These are the skills necessary to help your clients achieve real, lasting results.
Great programs go one step farther, providing you the opportunity to put what you're learning into practice through peer coaching, mentoring, and feedback. Many programs will also provide business training on how to define your voice and brand, attract clients, and launch a coaching practice.
In short, life coach certification is a process that helps you learn how to make the most of each client session. You'll discover how to deliver impactful coaching, while instilling your clients with hope and the possibility of lasting change throughout the process.
How long do coaching programs take?
It all depends! Some coach training programs only last a few days while others may span an entire year.
At Lumia Coaching, our Signature Program is a 9 month intensive, designed to help new and established practitioners launch a full-time coaching practice and prepare for international accreditation.
Led by 20+ expert instructors from diverse backgrounds, the program is delivered via LIVE weekly training sessions online, plus weekly interactive "Office Hours" and Monthly Coaching Mastery sessions where founders Noelle Cordeaux and John Kim answer your questions on all things coaching.

How much will I pay?
Coaching certifications are offered both online and in person. Costs can range from $1,500 to $10,000... and sometimes more. Each program has a signature style and unique way of teaching participants. Training programs vary in length and depth, and their costs usually reflect that as well.
Many people wonder if this investment will pay off, and it’s a fair question. The answer is individual, so it’s important to really know your goals and financial considerations as you weigh the options.
