The Value of a Coaching Session

We all have different reasons for hiring a coach but generally speaking, a coach is someone who helps us get from where we are now to where we want to be. Coaching helps us propel our lives and co-create a positive future. So how does this work in the space of coaching? Let's take alook!

Basics: The Value of A Coaching Session

The job of a coach varies, mainly depending on what type of coach you've hired and the goals you have set for coaching. But every coach has the same objective in mind - to help you design your future vision and achieve whatever goals you set in your own life. They’re there to make a positive impact and help you gain clarity, motivation and find accountability along the way.

Oftentimes we think we’re clear on things when our thoughts may actually be quite murky. An effective coach will help you see through the haze and guide you towards clarity. This will allow you to set better plans, choose appropriate action steps, and provide methods for getting back on track if you lose your way.

The Role of Positive Intervention

Friends are often our go-to people for support when we're facing a challenge. And truth be told, they can be really good at it! But what our friends and family can provide is different from the positive interventions that coaches are trained to deliver.

A coach is a professional that you have sought out to help you in this work, which changes the dynamic but also ensures that you're committed for the long haul. Which is to say, your coach is showing up for YOU, without any other agenda than the one you set. An effective coach will ensure that you’re actually making progress in life, as long as you're putting in the work on your end.

Among the advantages of coaching is that you have a person in your corner that you can trust completely, and who sees you. Actually sees you. This person will be your ray of hope on days you’re demoralized, unsure, or just flat-out clueless! Your coach will hold your future vision from session to session, injecting consistent hope and encouragement in your life, so that you can keep pushing forward.

Why Strategizing with an Expert is so Important

A professional coach is a dedicated thought partner. Whether it's a business coach helping you with your career, or a life coach strategizing with you on how to pursue your passions.
Each session will remind you of exactly how valuable it is to have someone help you map out things in life, and figure out viable pathways toward your goal.

Life can be complicated sometimes, and let’s admit it… so many things happen every single day. We forget things. We get sidetracked. Next thing we know, we’re nowhere near the goal we intended to pursue. With the help of coaching sessions, you have someone who will guide you to come back to the drawing board and be reminded of the plan you created. And you have someone who will help you rework things in case plans A, B, and C don’t pan out.

Impact of Coaching

According to the 2017 International Coaching Federation’s Global Consumer Awareness Study, clients who have partnered with a life coach report a variety of positive impacts across the board.

Outcomes from life coaching include:

  • Improved communication
  • Increased self-esteem/self-confidence
  • Increased productivity
  • Optimized performance
  • Improved work/life balance

Before Hiring A Coach, Ask:

Are they certified?

Coaching is an unregulated industry. What this means is that unlike the practice of therapy, anyone can say they are a coach (see video above!) That’s why knowing where your coach is coming from is important. Who trained them? Are they certified? What is their philosophy and approach to coaching?

Do we click?

The way your coach looks at life matters. Their tone, style, and approach can make or break the experience for you. Lack of compatibility is one of the main reasons why some people come away unhappy with the coaching process. When you don’t click, it’s hard to get the results you want. Most coaches will offer a short complementary session for you both to assess fit. Take advantage of it!

Am I serious?

If you are considering hiring a coach, the most important question to ask is: “Am I ready?” Do you have the time and energy to do self reflection, take weekly action, and make real changes in your life? Are you open to trying new things and being held accountable? Are you ready to commit to yourself and keep going, even if a part of you feels like quitting?

If you’re a solid YES on these questions, go in with an awareness that coaching is a commitment. Expect to be working with your coach for a period of at least 3-6 months.
