Ever thought of the value of a coaching session? We took a deep-dive into how coaching brings clarity, peace of mind, and an actionable plan.

The Catalyst Life Coaching Podcast, featuring JRNI Coaching founders John Kim and Noelle Cordeaux is a deep dive into the experience and business of being a life coach. Each coaching session is different. We all have different reasons for hiring a coach but generally speaking, a coach is someone who helps us get from where we are now to where we want to be. Coaching helps us propel our lives and co-create a positive future. So if you’re wondering why is coaching and mentoring important, if you’re thinking about the advantages of coaching, these and more are the answers. A coach does more than mentor us, and so each session is as valuable as what we put into it.

But the thing is, as we keep working with a coach, we may lose sight of the importance of each individual coaching session. As it becomes a normal part of our routine, it’s difficult for us to pay more attention to each session. So let’s refresh our memories...

Basics: The Value of A Coaching Session

The job of a coach varies, mainly depending on what type of coach you hired and what goals you set with that coach. But each coach has one similar goal - to help you co-create the future and achieve whatever goals you set in your own life. They’re there to make a positive impact and help you gain clarity, motivation and find accountability along the way.

Believe it or not, oftentimes we think we’re clear on things when really, we’re highly confused. An effective coach will help you see through this and actually guide you towards clarity. This will allow you to set better plans, follow-through techniques, and give you methods on how to get back on track if you lose your way.

Each session also reveals various tools that will help you get to where you want to be. So the moment it starts feeling normal, when you feel like you’re valuing each session less and less, you might be missing these tools that your coach has laid in front of you.

The Role of Positive Intervention

Friends are often our go-to people for positive intervention. And truth be told, they are really good at it. But friends as a positive intervention is different compared to a coach as a positive intervention. A coach is a professional that you have sought out to help you in this work, which changes the dynamic but also ensures that you're committed for the long haul. Which is to say, your coach will take this part of the job seriously. After all, an effective coach will ensure that you’re actually making progress in life, as long as you're putting in the work on your end.

Among the advantages of coaching or having a coach is that you have a person whom you trust, and who sees you. Actually sees you. This person will be your ray of hope on days you’re just flat-out clueless with what you're doing with your life. Your coach, through each session, will keep injecting hope in your life, so that you can keep pushing even through the dark days.

Why Strategizing with an Expert is so Important

This is yet another reason why is coaching is important… to have someone help you in strategizing. Whether that’s a business coach helping you with, well, your business, or a life coach strategizing with you on how to pursue your passions while staying sane… having an effective coach and mentor matters.

Each session will remind you of exactly how valuable it is to have someone help you map out things in life, and figure out pathways through things. Life can be complicated sometimes, and let’s admit it… so many things happen every single day. We forget things. We get sidetracked. Next thing we know, we’re nowhere near the goal we aim to pursue. With the help of coaching sessions, you have someone who will guide you to come back to the drawing board and be reminded of the plan you created. And you have someone who will help you rework things in case plans A, B, and C don’t work.

Better Understanding Social Constructionism

Social constructionism is a sociological theory that centers on the belief that “meanings are created socially.” Take money for example. Technically, it has no value. It’s really just paper bills and zinc and copper a.k.a. pennies. But through time, our society has given it value. We now see it as one of the most important things in life.

Person A who lives a simple life with not many material things but always full of gratitude may think Person B who lives in New York has too much money and it’s something Person A considers a luxury. But for Person B who lives in New York, she may think her money isn’t too much but is simply enough to get by in an expensive city. Persons A and B have two different lifestyles, but they’re friends. They interact with each other and the more they know each other, the more they develop different understandings based on their similarities and differences.

Social constructionism may sound complex but it affects each of us as it impacts how we see the world. Each interaction will help you better understand it more and the role it plays in your daily life.

Drive Performance and Propel Your Life Forward

We cannot stress this enough. The value of a coaching session is not just about the dollar sign. More than that, it’s how it impacts you as someone who hired a coach in the first place. And if you hired a certified, well-trained coach, each session will help you push through the tough days in life. It will give you the proper tools to improve your performance in life, be it business-wise or personally. And your coach will guide you when and how to use such tools properly.

Communicate Better and More Effectively

Who has problems communicating? Believe it or not, so many people… communicating your thoughts and ideas don’t always come easy. Oftentimes, when we have something to say but the situation is scary, we choose to shut up. When we want to say no but our brains are hard-wired to say yes, we end up saying yes even if we have too much on our plates. Lastly, if we have questions but we’re afraid it’ll make us look dumb, we choose not to ask.

These are just a few examples of communication-related struggles many people experience so often it’s become normal. It is not. Speaking up, sharing your thoughts and ideas, being firm on what you believe in, it takes courage and self-confidence. Which is to say, the value of a coaching session truly matters more than we realize.
