Authentic Marketing for Coaches: Why Being Real Beats Being Perfect (ft. Tim Brownson)

Learn from 20-year veteran Tim Brownson why being genuinely yourself attracts better clients and builds a sustainable practice with just 25 clients per year.

In a world where it's increasingly difficult to tell what's real and what's not, authenticity has become the secret weapon that sets successful coaches apart. During a recent conversation with Tim Brownson, founder of The Fully Booked Coach and a veteran with over 20 years in the coaching industry, we explored how being genuinely yourself is essential for building a thriving coaching practice.

Why Authenticity Matters More Than Ever

When Tim and I discussed what makes coaches truly successful, we kept coming back to one thing: authenticity. This authenticity is a business imperative. When you're selling coaching services, you're not selling a product. You're selling a relationship. And relationships can't survive without trust, which can't exist without authenticity.

Tim had a breakthrough early in his blogging journey when he stopped censoring his language. As he explained, "I want to attract people to work with me who aren't going to be offended by my language. If they are, they're not good clients for me anyway."

One question that comes up frequently is: How do you balance authenticity with professionalism? Tim's approach is instructive here. He shares personal stories and even admits failures (like pulling the plug on a Circle community that wasn't working), but he's strategic about it. The key is sharing your humanity in ways that add value and help others, not using your audience as a therapy session.

The Magic Number: You Only Need 25 Clients

Here's something that might surprise you: Tim's entire successful coaching practice is built around serving approximately 25 clients per year. That's it.

This number is liberating because it means you don't need to appeal to everyone. You can afford to be yourself, even if it turns some people off. As Tim explains, "How many clients does any one coach need? It's an incredibly small amount. I can afford to just target those people and not worry about the rest."

This perspective completely changes how you approach marketing and client attraction. Instead of trying to please everyone, you can focus on deeply connecting with the right people.

Redefining Success on Your Own Terms

Perhaps the most important insight from our conversation was around redefining what success looks like. Tim and I both realized that we don't want the Gary Vee or Tony Robbins lifestyle, despite their obvious success.

My version of success? "Ample rest, ample ease, and ample socialization." Tim's? Walking his dogs every morning for an hour and a half, regardless of client requests, and spending money on experiences rather than accumulating wealth.

Practical Steps to Start Being More Authentic

  1. Identify Your Non-Negotiables: What aspects of your life and values won't you compromise for your business?
  2. Share Strategic Vulnerability: Think about challenges you've overcome that could help others. Share the lessons, not the trauma.
  3. Start a Simple Newsletter: Begin with one email per month. Share personal stories, insights, and helpful perspectives.
  4. Be Genuinely Helpful Online: Pick one platform and focus on adding value without trying to sell.
  5. Define Success for Yourself: What does a successful life look like to you, beyond income metrics?

The Ripple Effect of Authentic Coaching

When you show up authentically as a coach, you're not just building a sustainable business—you're giving others permission to be themselves too. As Tim noted, "When we're doing it, somebody else has been dealing with the same problems. When we talk about ours, it's like, 'Oh, thank God. I'm not on my own.'"

The coaching industry needs more real humans, not more polished facades. Your story, your perspective, your unique combination of experiences—that's not just your differentiator, it's your superpower.

The beautiful paradox? The most effective marketing strategy is simply being authentically yourself.

Remember, you only need 25 people this year to say yes to working with you. In a world of billions, 25 people who resonate with your authentic voice and approach is absolutely achievable.

The question isn't whether you're qualified enough, experienced enough, or polished enough to start coaching. The question is: Are you ready to show up as yourself and serve the people who need exactly what you have to offer?
